Known as the “City of Oaks,” Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina and is one of the country’s fastest-growing cities. The town was named after Sir Walter Raleigh, who was responsible for establishing the lost Roanoke Colony in what is currently Dare County. The city’s primary airport, Raleigh-Durham International Airport, is the second-largest in the state and serves both the city and the greater Research Triangle metropolitan area. While more than 10 million passengers use RDU each year, there are also several publicly-owned aviation airports and licensed private general-aviation facilities that operate in the region.

In terms of local transportation options, Capital Area Transit provides public transit throughout the city, operating 33 fixed bus routes, and Triangle Transit also offers scheduled commuter and regional bus services. The city is also extremely accommodating  to commuters in personal vehicles, with less gridlock traffic when compared to similar areas.

Major Employers

The city is home to several large employers, including the State of North Carolina, Wake County Public School System, North Carolina State University, and WakeMed. Other notable employers such as Progress Energy, Duke Raleigh Hospital, and the City of Raleigh round out the list, making the town one of the most diverse in terms of business and employment opportunities. In fact, the region has enjoyed reasonably low unemployment statistics in comparison to other metropolitan areas for some time.
